Coil Spring specifications required in manufacturing

Coil Spring manufacturing requires precise specifications covering physical dimensions, material grades, mechanical performance rates and finish types. Dimensional data required – Wire diameter, Coil diameter, Number of coils, Free length and end configuration.

Wire diameter (d) : The wire diameter (symbol d) is the physical thickness of the metal wire used to form a Coil Spring. The wire diameter represents the thickness of a Spring. Generally it is found between 1 mm. – 70 mm. in thickness.

Coil diameter : Coil Spring’s diameter is the width of its circular coils. It is measured in three ways – Outer Diameter (OD) from the outer edges, Inner Diameter (ID) across the hollow center and Mean Diameter (MD) is the subtract one wire diameter from the outer diameter or add one wire diameter to the inner diameter. Generally the outer diameter of a Coil Spring is found between 20 mm. – 500 mm.

Number of coils (t) : To calculate, start at one cut end of the wire and trace it around a full 360-degree circle. Each complete circle equals one coil, add any partial turns at the ends to get the total number of coils. Total number of spring coils are counted from tip to top. The coil count refers to the total number of turns or loops in a Spring.

Free length (L0) : Total length of a Spring in its default, unloaded state, it is a very common and important term. Coil Spring’s free length is the total un-loaded length of a Spring in its completely unloaded state before any force or external load is applied. The length of a spring when it is not loaded. Max. capacity is available up to 1000 mm.

Load rate : Coil Spring load rate is the amount of weight or force needed to compress a spring by a single unit of distance. It is calculated using Hooke’s Law (F = k × x), where the load (F) equals the spring rate (k) multiplied by the deflection/travel distance. Rate Rate = Load (lbs.) ÷ Spring Deflection (in.). It refers to the amount of weight it takes to compress a spring a certain distance. Also the Spring rate is the measurement of how much load (in pounds) a coil spring can hold. Example : 400 lbs. constant at 200 lbs. per inch, 6.076 lbf/in etc.

Compression Spring : This is a open-coil Helical Springs designed to resist compressive linear forces (push) and open-coil Helical Springs wound or constructed to oppose compression. It serves as energy storage mechanisms when compressed and store energy when force is applied. It is designed to resist compressive forces, open-coiled steel wire in a variety of cross sections and forms. This Spring is an open-coil Helical Spring that resists compressive axial forces, made of round Spring wire and has the shape of a helical coil, elastic machine elements that can be compressed by axial pressure. Max capacity – Wire Dia 70 mm., OD 500 mm., Length 1000 mm. and Load 40 Tons.

Tension Spring : It’s absorbs and stores energy by resisting a pulling force. This is a tightly coiled Springs designed to resist a tensile or stretching, force. This Springs used for applications that receive a tensile load. It have tightly wound coils with no pitch between them. This is a mechanical Spring designed to operate under tensile force, that tightly wrapped coils that function under a force called tension. It is a round shaped coil metal Spring that exhibits flexibility and durability in industrial conditions. Max capacity – Wire Dia 40 mm., OD 300 mm., Length 1500 mm. and Load 20 Tons.

Torsion Spring : This is a mechanical component that stores rotational energy and exerts torque when twisted. This is a Spring that works by twisting its end along its axis. They are Springs that receive a twisting moment around the coil. It stores elastic energy as bending stress in the wire of its coils and exerts a force (torque) in a circular arc. It is designed to operate with torque / twisting / rotary force. This is a type of Spring that works by twisting its ends in opposite directions and essential mechanical components used to store and release rotational energy. Max capacity – Wire Dia 30 mm., OD 400 mm., Length 2000 mm. and Load 15 Tons.

Conical Spring : A Conical Spring is a tapered, cone-shaped compression spring with coils that progressively increase or decrease in diameter. They are a type of compression spring that are in shape of cone. Conical Springs are basically compression springs coiled in increasing or decreasing outer diameters thus making its shape a cone or tapered one. The Conical Spring achieves less body bending and a lower adherence height depending on the shape.

Closed end Coil Spring : A closed end Spring is a Compression Spring where the pitch of the end coils is reduced so the wire tip touches the adjacent coil. Closed and squared ends are the most popular type of ends in Compression Springs. Closed Coil Springs have touching coils and work in tension or torsion. In a closed end Spring, the pitch of the Spring is flat on the end and the tip of the Spring is in approximate contact with the adjacent coil. Closed-end Compression Springs stand upright on flat surfaces due to closed terminal coils.

Square end Coil Spring : A square end Spring commonly called a closed and squared end Compression Spring has end coils that touch the adjacent coil and reduce the pitch to zero. Closed and squared ends are the most popular type of ends in Compression Springs. Square end Springs are best if a ground end is desired. This type of Coil Spring can stand upright without falling over and they are designed for maximum load-bearing capacity.

Open end Coil Spring : An open-end Spring is a Compression Spring where the final coils keep their normal pitch without squaring or closing off. Open Coil Springs are springs whose coils have space or a pitch between each active coil, they are usually designed to fit over a rod or shaft. An open-end Spring leaves the final coil in its natural pitch without bending it back toward the previous coil. Open ends are less common for Compression Spring.

Pigtail end Coil Spring : A pigtail end Spring is a specialized Helical Compression Spring featuring one or both ends tapered down into a reduced-diameter, pig-tail-like coil shape. Pigtail Springs are a type of Coil Spring that features a coiled design with a pigtail end. Pigtail Springs are Cylindrical Coil Springs with curled coil ends that are extensively used in various industrial applications and they are Cylindrical Coil Springs with curled coil ends that are extensively used in various industrial applications.
